Council discusses urban chickens, library parking

During tonight's meeting, two local residents, Andy and Larue Lockhart, received conditional use approval from the City Council for raising domestic hens.

The conditional use  approval does contain certain restrictions such as there are to be no roosters on the property, eggs are not to be sold commercially and the police must be notified if there are any issues with predators that are related to the hens.

"I can assure you that if this becomes a problem the chickens are gone," Andy Lockhart said. "We are going to try to this out because we think it could be a great thing."

In other news, the council passed a resolution accepting a bid for construction for additional parking at the Library in the Forest. The city bought the former private residence at 1421 Round House Road in December, which will be used to build an additional 46 parking spaces. The city also plans to build a privacy wall between the parking area and residential area.

The council also passed a resolution requesting additional personnel in the finance department due to the new tag renewal service. Mayor Butch Zaragoza said that the city is averaging 40 renewals per day. For more information on tag renewal in Vestavia Hills, click here.

"Our residents have said they love this service and its convenience," Zaragoza said.

At the July 11 meeting, the council plans to discuss an ordinance for mobile food units in Vestavia Hills.
