During the April 27 meeting, the City Council appointed Shera Grant to the Vestavia Hills Board of Education.

Grant, deputy public defender at the Jefferson County Community Law Office, will serve a term of five years, beginning with the first regularly scheduled meeting of the Board in June. Board President Kym Prewitt's term will expire on June 24.

Six applications were received for the Vestavia Hills Board of Education vacancy. Those applicants were Anita Turner, Shera Grant, Patrick Dewees, Angie Saia, Kimberly Cook and Allison Miller. Interviews were held on Wednesday, April 15.

"This was one of the toughest decisions we've had to make," Councilman John Henley said. "We are truly blessed to live in a community where so many people are willing to put themselves forward for public service."

"For all those that applied, we want you to come back," said Mayor Butch Zaragoza.

Grant grew up in Birmingham, attended Ramsay High School and graduated summa cum laude from Alabama State University. After completing her undergraduate studies, Grant attended Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Law and the Université D’ Aix-Marseille III in Aix-en-Provence, France. Grant has served as an assistant city solicitor with the city of Atlanta Solicitor’s Office, prosecuting city offenses, and in 2004 became an assistant district attorney with the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office. She then was promoted to senior special prosecutor for the domestic violence/sexual assault unit, and then promoted again to chief assistant of the Juvenile Court Division of the District Attorney’s Office. In December 2010, Grant moved back to her hometown to start her own law practice, The Grant Firm, LLC.

"I look forward to serving and thank you for this opportunity," said Grant.
