City moves forward with Cahaba Heights road project

During the June 22 council meeting, the city moved forward with an agreement for a proposed road project adjacent to VHECH. The first phrase of the project is set to be complete by the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year in August.

In August 2014, the council approved the agreement with Sain Associates for the new roadway. City Manager Jeff Downes said the project is part of a supplement to the Cahaba Heights Master Plan. The roadway will serve as a through street between Dolly Ridge Road and Cahaba Heights Road and will extend to Oakview Lane and provide new turnouts to the elementary school.

The first phase of the plan will include adding a three-lane road section on to Dolly Ridge Road that will taper to two lanes and end at the existing baseball field behind the school. It will provide new turnouts to the school. Later stages of the plan could include widening Dolly Ridge Road with additional turn lanes.

"We feel that through a negotiated bid process, we can get Phase 1-A complete before school starts in August," Downes said.
