During a July 29 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Sheila Phillips gave an update on school facilities, technology and mascot rebranding efforts.

Facilities/construction

During the meeting, maintenance supervisor Ed Varden gave a construction update. He said the Vestavia Hills High School concession stand is set to to open on Aug. 15 and the press box will be open by the first VHHS home football game.

Renovations to the Vestavia Elementary East School bathrooms are also on track for completion.

"I am very pleased with the work that is going on in getting ready for the new school year," said Phillips.

Technology

Phillips said teachers underwent a wealth of professional development over the summer months. One main area of focus was looking at new learning management systems. The school system will soon start using Google Classroom.

Phillips said she has been in conversations with a company about safety and security when it comes to online technology. She said the protection of student data is of top concern.

She also reminded the audience online registration has been postponed until this Friday, July 31.

"We wanted to make sure we had time for testing to make for a smooth transition," she said.

Phillips invited everyone to attend the Aug. 11 Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce meeting where State Superintendent Tommy Bice will be the featured speaker.

VHHS mascot rebranding efforts

During a July 15 meeting, the Board voted to keep the VHHS Rebel name but stated they will enter into an aggressive process with a professional firm to rebrand the mascot.

At tonight's meeting, Phillips did not disclose the name of the firm but did say a proposal is being developed. A Q&A will soon be put on the Board of Education website addressing concerns over the rebranding process.

The rebranding process will take a year and Phillips said it will involve students and community stakeholders, with students being the top priority.
