71-year-old man charged with assault

Vestavia Hills Police Department charged a 71-year-old Irondale resident with felony assault after he reportedly struck a 75-year-old man in the head.

Police responded to a report in the 3100 block of Cahaba Heights Road on Saturday, Aug .8 at 7:55 a.m. The victim said the suspect attacked him when he got out of his car.

The victim said the suspect used a bat or something similar to repeatedly hit him in the head and attempted to flee the scene on a bicycle. Bystanders stepped in, however, and detained the suspect until police arrived.

The suspect was identified at Benny J. Green. Green was arrested and taken to Brookwood Hospital for medical evaluation. He was later released into police custody and a felony warrant for first degree assault was obtained. He was transferred to Jefferson County Jail, pending $150,000 bond.

The victim was transported to UAB Hospital for medical treatment.
