The Vestavia Hills City Council approved funding for phase two of the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex project at its meeting Monday night.

The city will provide $599,000 of the approximately $1.7 million construction cost to complete the project.

Of the total amount, $100,000 was already budgeted for the current fiscal year, and the resolution would take the remaining $499,000 from the Capital Reserve Fund.

City Manager Jeff Downes said the fund currently contains around $6.4 million after the sale of the former city hall facilities.

Phase II will include amenities such as trails, pavilions, a splash pad and playground equipment.

Luci Beavers of Kompan Playgrounds was at the meeting to answer questions about possible Kompan equipment.

While Kompan equipment may look unusual, Beavers said it meets all national safety standards.

Beavers said the proposed design would also be Vestavia’s first completely ADA-accessible playground.

The Council also heard the first readings of an ordinance to sell the public works property, as well a resolution to apply for an ADECA grant for a park at Patchwork Farms.
